Key findings South Africa’s mineral policy interventions over the past two decades have had a detrimental effect on the economic contribution and performance of the sector. Furthermore, these interventions have failed to deliver some of its key socioeconomic objectives. The overall efficacy of South Africa’s mineral policy has been low. The South African Government has responded to the serious global challenge of environmental pollution and climate change by introducing several environmental taxes that are intended to modify behaviour of the country’s citizens for sustainable development of the economy.
